Sooke Harbour House Wedding Industry Retreat

Well, not quite sure where to begin in describing how incredibly spoiled we were for two days last week!! Our colleague and friend Christine Smart, of Christine Smart Events, collaborated with Frederique and Sinclair of Sooke Harbour House to bring the best of Victoria’s wedding industry together for a two day event filled with fantastic food, beautiful details, thoughtful discussion, and of course good friends! We really felt incredibly honoured to be included in the guest list and we truly appreciate how much work Christine put into making this event so meaningful. We enjoyed a great tour of the property and learned a lot about Sooke Harbour House as a venue. Normally tented receptions are not our favourite but the tent at Sooke Harbour House is really incredible and does not feel like a tent at all. I had always thought of Sooke Harbour House as being a venue for very small intimate events but they actually have a great variety of spaces for large groups. We were also really impressed by their flexibilty in customizing rooms for their clients. It definitely taught us not have assupmtions about the restrictions of a venue but to ask questions as you never know it may just be perfect for you. So now I have to get to the part where we were incredibly spoiled as we ate so much amazing food!!!!  Well you will see in the images below that not only was it beautiful but so so delicious. The staff from Sooke Harbour House, Truffles Catering, Feys and Hobbs Catered Arts, and The London Chef really truly out did themselves! There was an emphasis on local and seasonal ingredients and variety and flavour was really outstanding. If anyone needs recommendations for careering for your wedding we have first hand knowledge of their delicious talents!! I think one of the favourites was lunch by The London Chef’ –  Dan makes a mean seafood bouillabaisse!! It was also entertaining to watch us attempt to eat it as we munched through the crab legs, fish, mussels, and other sea creatures. I like it when I get to try new things I wouldn’t normally think I would like and then love it.

Before dinner many of the gals were graciously treated to hair and makeup by Elana of Conscious Hair and Melanie Baird Makeup Artist. It created a great environment of visiting as people came and went through the afternoon. There is something really special about having someone else do your hair and makeup and it was great to be the one in the seat for a little bit. The evening dinner was set up as a fancy family style dinner party.  The table was one of the most beautiful we have seen and was a collaboration between Verbena Floral Design, Clare Day Flowers, and Rook and Rose Floral Boutique. Sarah from Modern Bodger contributed cut wood rounds to support to floral displays. Not sure I need to say much about this as the images will say it for me but it was amazing to see these artists work together to create segments of the table that went so well together but also highlighted their individual style. I love that we are connected to so many talented people that find friendship within their industry and this table setting really reflected that. Other than flowers there was something else really beautiful on the table. I have to admit I had not given much thought to hand-written stationary until now. When we arrived at dinner there was a gorgeous hand-written menu by calligraphy artist Laura Lavender. She also wrote all of the place cards and I have to say it made us feel really special to have our names so beautifully written for us – I think I might frame them. Laura’s talents would really compliment any event so you should look her up if you are considering custom stationary for your day.

It was so great to get together with fellow photographers, make some new friends, finally get a chance to chat with those in catering who are always running around busy when we see them at receptions, and mostly to connect and communicate with those who all have a common goal – to produce the best possible wedding day for our clients. Christine along with Frederique and Sinclair you really truly outdid yourselves. Thanks you so so much for your hospitality and including us in such a fantastic two days! We look forward to many more chances to collaborate together in the future! Ok enough said now check out all the beautiful work by so many talented people and as usual we were too busy photographing others to include ourselves!

Looks like a divine retreat! Thank you so much for sharing. Wish there was something like that around me for portrait photographers!
