Heather and Burton’s highland wedding was the perfect way to end our 2011 wedding season. We love this couple – they were so calm and happy on their day in-spite of some unexpected events, very soggy morning weather, and all the normal stresses that can happen on such a big day. They were just so so happy to be marrying each other that their joy really showed. As we are both from a Scottish background (a Campbell married a McMillan – thank goodness we didn’t hyphenate!) we loved all of the very Scottish details of their day: the kilts, the thistle, the heather boutonnieres, the pins, the silver steins, and of course the piper! Heather and Burton gave each other such special gifts with notes continuing on a family tradition before heading out to the ceremony. The morning started out rainy and then became quite windy – by the time we arrived at the chapel at St. Ann’s Academy we were so thankful for such a gorgeous indoor location as outside shooting was not going to be easy! Their ceremony had some effect though and when the church doors opened and they followed the piper out, they were greeted with clear blue skies and sunshine! Burton and his family have a tradition of firefighting up in his hometown of Hudson’s Hope BC. This love of fire halls led them to ask permission to use the Oak Bay Firehall for some photographs and after the ceremonial badges were exchanged the place was all ours – until a fire call happened and they had to race off! Lucky for us they were back in time for Heather to have a photograph with the firemen! I don’t know what it is about those guys but pretty much all of us were a bit smitten – the girls for obvious reasons and the boys – well how cool is their job! We then headed to one of her favourite beaches and were greeted with a rare warm strong September wind. Some couples would pause at the thought of taking their hair, kilt, dress into such a gale but true to their scottish roots these two loved the time we all spent out on the rocks. When we arrived at their reception we couldn’t believe their cake!! Cake My Day really did such an amazing job at recreating Heather, Burton, and their two pups all on a jar of famous Hudson’s Hope Honey. They didn’t mind the wind, they laughed at the unexpected spray from a wave and so totally enjoyed their day that we were sad when our day with them ended. Even though we loved the colour of the day we were really taken with the timeless beauty of the black and whites from their day so included a few more than usual. Thanks so much to the men of the Oak Bay Fire Hall who shared their house with us and thanks especially to Heather and Burton for the best day to end our season on. We wish you and your families all of the best in your new adventures together!
